Working with the open heart has certain built-in safeguards. There is no cruelty in the vast, rich territory of the heart, no need for power or ascendancy over others. In fact, in most Eastern systems of thought the heart, or fourth chakra, is the meeting ground of spirit and flesh, heaven and earth, and therefore the doorway to enlightenment. It is where our cruder energies are transformed into love and compassionate wisdom. It is a place of great nourishment, empathy, and kindness. So the open heart is a good place to cultivate and inhabit, in and of itself; all of us could use more time in its generous spaces, with or without the intention of psychic opening.
