When we wrap ourselves in the tallit [prayer shawl], we wrap up not just for physical warmth, but for spiritual closeness. We encircle and enwrap ourselves in a womblike cocoon with God. We "cuddle" with God under a holy blanket. As morning unfolds for us, we can still whisper the endearments of the night; we can still speak tender words of affection and commitment. We can shed the tears of yearning or fulfillment; we can mouth the secrets that we want only God to hear. Wrapped in the dark folds of the tallit, we can listen for God's still small voice, and we can hear God's sweetest and most holy words.

Wrapped in this garment of the fibers of the earth, our souls can soar to the highest places. The cloth of the tallit connects us with the oneness of God's creation; using it wraps us up with God. It is an all-enveloping, all-encompassing garment of deepest intimacy and of greatest love.
