The approach to an elder to ask a pointed question is a lot like that in hunting a moose. You circle around the elder, taking a lot of time, then circle around the question, poke at it a little, come back for more after giving it thought. Thoughtful practice of the art of conversation becomes more important when engaging a master of the art, which many elders are.
