The Algonquin have a great reverence for the mother earth and put that reverence into practice. Tobacco is offered before a hole is dug into the earth and digging is only done when necessary, such as for a sacred ceremony, a burial, or other traditional purpose. Some western Algonquians practiced "sky burials" for this reason. (The body is placed on a wooden platform where the vultures can feast on it.)
