Pilgrimage is about willingness and trust: willingness to open ourselves up however briefly to the divine in the world around us, trust that the "flash of revelation" will come. We do not know what form it will take, or when it will arrive. In the film Mermaids, the actress Winona Ryder says something like: "Whoever heard of anyone hearing the Voice of God doing 70 miles per hour down the freeway?" She couldn't be more wrong.
