Japanese myths of the Creation say there was an original chaos which of its own indwelling power produced the amatsu kami or "deities of heaven." From the kami descended the islands of Japan, other spiritual beings, and the Japanese people. Thus human beings, the land, and nature are intimately related and consequently, the whole material world is seen to have a spiritual dimension as well.
