Another lovely metaphor for God's creative and sustaining activity is the vision of the sixth century monastic reformer Benedict of Nursia (480-547). Legend tells us that once while keeping a vigil Saint Benedict saw a ray of light shining from the hand of God. Suspended within the one ray Benedict saw all creation whirling in the golden light like flecks of dust.
