Eastern iconographers seek to give to the icons they paint an abstract and hieratic or sacred character. Just as the power of the Holy Spirit shone forth from the transfigured Christ on Mount Tabor, so also the human figures radiate a divine awareness, with the gold background of icons representing the grace of the Holy Spirit.
