Like cognitive and behavioral therapies, [Zen] focuses on patterns of thinking and acting now. Indeed, part of "right effort" is ridding the mind of negative states so that positive traits, such as compassion and concentration, can take root. Its upbeat, take-charge approach is a big part of Zen's appeal to Americans: There's something we can do — cultivate mindfulness — that can prevent our lives from becoming a mere reaction to the things that happen to us.
