Thomas Merton wrote to a friend who was fretting over his spiritual progress: "Above all, don't be worried about the pace, about what is happening, about what seems to be going on on the surface. Hand that over to God, and believe that below the surface our mind and will and heart are being drawn into a place where God is at work." It takes considerable trust in God to keep plugging away at the task of growing spiritually.
