The recitation of kaddish by mourners is an affirmation that they accept God's rule. It is thus a way of coming to terms with the inevitability of loss and our human inability to prevent death. It affirms that generations will go forward and that God's praises will continue to be heard throughout the world, despite our individual losses. By reciting the kaddish aloud the mourner in effect leads the congregation in declaring God's praise and demonstrates that faith helps us to transcend loss. When we stand up in the community and recite kaddish, we affirm life itself, even as we face mortality.
