For 400 years science and technology has exploited its seizure of power over nature. We now need another time in which to integrate human civilization in the nature of this planet earth. For our civilization too is only part of nature. The last fifty years have brought an enormous increase in what we have discovered and know; we now need a still greater increase of wisdom and of wise dealings with our knowledge. If humanity is to have a future, that future belongs not to knowledge but to wisdom; for 'wisdom gives life to him who has it' (Sirach 7.12).
