Places of intense suffering can become places where the very nature of hope is revealed — its vulnerability, yet its power to gather up the fragments of shattered community, shattered humanity, and devastated nature. In the tragic coalescing of time and place, it is still possible, as Isaiah knew, for a people who walk in darkness to witness to a great light (Isaiah 9:2).
