Jewish rituals of life-passage can be better understood in a fourfold way:

The hazy emergence of a new almost-identity from the ground of a previous social role;

the person's earthquake encounter with the Holy, with the Transformative, with God;

the public clarification of a new identity out of this encounter;

the return of the transformed person to the community, in a new role and as a new person.
