"Fill your bowl to the brim, and it will spill," says Lao Tzu in the Tao Te Ching. When the bowl spills over, that's excess. . . . All forms of excess create imbalances in our bodies, which directly affect our emotional and spiritual states of consciousness. We starve our spirits when we live lives of excess — from excess processed foods and overconsumption to the pace at which we live and the stress we endure. It's very difficult to feel focused and motivated when your body is so burdened just by trying to maintain its biological functioning.
