[The Japanese concepts of] shoshin, mono no aware, wabi, and sabi are related. Shoshin is a beginner's mind that sees each moment in life as the first and only time that moment can be experienced. Mono no aware is an awareness of the fleeting and fragile nature of life, the fact that all created things deteriorate and dissolve back into the universe. Wabi-sabi correlates to an appreciation of this gradual dissolution, finding beauty in the rustic patina of age.
