For some of us, a timeless sensation emerges when we let go of our back-of-the-mind preoccupation with death. Author and hospice counselor Stephen Levine in One Year to Live, describes a welcome but unanticipated byproduct of his deliberate decision to live one year as if it were his last:

"My sense of time changed. There seems to be more of the present. A newfound energy has been liberated . . . my relationships with friends have deepened . . . afflictive emotions have become considerably less cumbersome, and love is more available and sustainable. It feels as though I have made peace with my life."
