It took me years to realize that a huge part of the Zen Buddhist tradition is about the teaching of humility. Without it, enlightenment can't happen. People may have experiences of sweet spaciousness, but so what? Without the compassion that grows out of our own experiences of humility, such breakthroughs can lead to Zen pride. It's downright dangerous.
