The poet Diane Ackerman says "Play is a refuge from ordinary life, a sanctuary of the mind, where one is exempt from life's customs, methods, and decrees." Fellow poet Donald Hall suggests that play is about "absorbedness" — "a noun with a lot of verb in it" — which connotes concentration, contentment, loss of self, loss of time, happiness and joy.
