In Zen this being, our very own being, is time. Time and being are identical, exactly the same. Dogen [Zenji] even wrote that time is uji, "time-being." When we say we are spending time, really we are talking about this quality of being and the place within us, the source, from which it is expressed. This is what you should look at when you consider how you are spending your time, because you are also spending this being. The quality of being is being spent.
