Ryokan, who loved animals and children, preferred the solitary life of a simple hermit — writing poetry, painting, and practicing calligraphy — to the hustle of life in a great Zen temple.
His last poem reads:
What will remain as my legacy
Flowers in spring
The cuckoo in summer
And the crimson leaves
Of autumn.
