When Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel was asked where God was at Auschwitz, he said that it was the wrong question and that we should be asking where human beings were at that time and place. In other words, we should not blame God for the messes we make through our own ignorant choices. God really did leave it up to us to finish the garden world in which we were placed, to create the world of justice and peace of which God dreams.
