Faith according to James Fowler is a way of seeing everyday life in relation to whatever we perceive is the ultimate value or power. By this definition, faith is a universal human attribute. Everyone has an "alignment of the will, a resting of the heart, in accordance with . . .one's ultimate concern." Faith steers our thoughts and actions, often without our direct awareness. Belief, on the other hand, is an effort to translate faith into concepts or propositions. Belief systems — religion and tradition — are means of making faith visible, graspable, and manageable.
