The Baal Shem Tov had the expert eye of a jeweler when it came to simple Jews: he could see virtues that others would not even notice. And he trained his disciples to recognize what their eyes saw. One day, he told his disciples, "Pay attention to Reb Pesach the Water-carrier when he enters the synagogue to pray."

The disciples knew Pesach the Water-carrier and considered him a merely simple uneducated Jew. They never paid any attention to him at all. But now they watched him before he entered the synagogue for the afternoon prayer. The saw how, with great care, he ritually washed his hands a number of times and wiped them with a towel. When he opened the synagogue door, his facial expression changed due to his awe and reverence. When he went in and looked at the holy Ark, they heard him utter the verse: "Shivitti HaShem l'negdi tamid!" ("I have placed the Lord before me always!") He became so aroused when he said this, that they saw that his face actually changed colors!
