What counters fear and its consequences is care for others. Care constitutes a fundamental category for us to understand life and relationships among all beings. Without care, life dies. Care is that predisposition which we nourish so that our actions will be beneficial, that is, protective of life and of good relationships among all. In this sense care is what sets in motion behaviors whose effects will be positive and will enhance shared life.

Caring for others means more than ministering to their interests; it means being involved with them, being concerned for their welfare, and feeling responsible with them for their fate. Thus, whatever we love, we care for, and whatever we care for, we also love.
