The Sanskrit term guru means someone who dispels ignorance. For almost every Hindu, there can be no authentic spiritual training without a guru. As the princial mediator, "the guru brings the human individual and God together," says Ramakrishna, "even as a matchmaker brings together the lover and the beloved. . . . The disciple sees guru and God as one and the same."
