How can you see the big picture from a small place? I find the beginnings of an answer in the word stead itself, which derives from an Indo-European word meaning to stand. To be steadfast is to stand by someone or something, out of a conviction that what you are committed to is worth loving and defending. A homestead is a place where one makes a stand.
