I see the light of the fire as representing the illumination that comes from the often fiery circumstances that touch our lives. I am reminded of what Viktor Frankl, a survivor of Nazi concentration camps, once said: "What is to give light must endure burning." Instead of pushing our fears away from such growth-filled experiences like dying, we can invite them closer, invite them to join us beside the fire itself. Though we may in some ways be "turning up the heat," we are also increasing the potential for illumination.
