Huston Smith notes that when the Japanese team scaled Anapurna, the second highest peak, they climbed it within fifty feet of the summit and deliberately stopped, as if out of respect for the mountain's sublimity. Thus is Japanese psychology, the goal of the relationship with nature is communion. In the Western world, the goal is stewardship or conquest.
