It is not uncommon for Japanese to be initiated in a Shinto ceremony as a child, married in a Christian ceremony, follow Confucian principles in public life, and after death, he or she will most certainly be buried and mourned according to Buddhist rituals. Many Japanese homes contain both a kami altar and a buddha altar, and the Japanese language contains a word to include all of the "divine" manifestations: shinbutsu, "gods and buddhas."
