We moderns use the word "spirit" to describe energy and vitality when we speak of community spirit, or the enthusiasm that builds for a football game. The root of the word "spirit" is the Latin word "spirarae," which means to "breathe together." "Spirits," disincarnate entities, are foreign to us. For us, spirits are sold in taverns, where good spirit is cultivated, and spirit is generated at sports pep rallies.
