As Anthony De Mello, SJ, warns us in Wellsprings, "Certainty is the sin of bigots, terrorists, and Pharisees." Uncertainty, however, can be disconcerting. The rise of religious fundamentalism in our own day is probably a reaction to the discomfort of ambiguity. As author Robertson Davies has said, "Fanaticism is . . . overcompensation for doubt."
