"Today, education places equal emphasis on 'morality and wisdom, the individual and the group, and education and amusement.' From ancient times, Buddhism has placed equal emphasis on five types of education: practicing together in the temples for morality; listening to the sutras in the lecture halls for wisdom; doing chores for one's own physical health; following the six harmonious virtues of the sangha for group education; and carving, painting, and singing for aesthetic education.
"Buddhism has many ways of 'practicing religion while having fun,' divisible into the following six general categories:
Athletics: walking meditation, making pilgrimages to various temples, traveling, Buddhist dancing, and practicing martial arts.
Music: singing, choir, playing musical instruments, traditional music, and storytelling.
Arts: calligraphy, sutra transcription, painting, carving, sculpture, and chess.
Flowers and tea: flower arrangement and tea ceremony.
Labor: working in nature, farming, working meditation, vegetable gardening, ascetic practice, and cooking.
Practicing and upholding the way: looking for teachers,
discussing the way, reciting the Buddha's name, engaging in Chan joys and Dharma happiness, and meditating."
