“Heschel encouraged people to view the human face as an immediate and concrete sign of God’s loving presence in our lives. Each of us is a unique representation of the Divine — the invisible Creator of all faces. This is why no two faces are alike. Even identical twins are not quite identical! Furthermore, no single face remains the same 'for more than an instant.' Heschel insisted that only be developing our capacity for lovingkindness — for God, for humankind, and for creation — could the world avoid the horrors of the recent past. Philosophy, science, and the arts are all very valuable, but they are not enough; we need 'pathos' (compassion or mercy, Greek origin) or hesed (Hebrew for 'lovingkindess,' 'compassion,' or 'mercy').”
