“During our time at Daybreak, Henri baptized various members of the community who had been overlooked for initiation into the sacraments for various reasons. These were radiant celebrations. Henri believed that none of us really understood the full mystery of communion, and therefore the sign of readiness was a reverent desire to participate. Being able to speak wasn’t necessary. Nonverbal members of the community received first communion to the great joy of their families and community.

“Henri had a special relationship with children. We took our baby Janet to Mass at the Dayspring with us each morning, and we were all amused when her first word was ‘Peace!’ proclaimed loudly and joyfully as we all exchanged the peace greeting at Mass. ‘You can start writing her hagiography now!’ exclaimed Henri with great excitement…. Henri took children seriously.”
