This large book is brimming with more than 200 color photographs, maps, and charts. It explains the principal planks of contemporary world religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Taoism, and Baha'i) and includes material on indigenous traditions as well. Although it notes the similarities between the religions, it also explains their differences. In the introduction, we read:

"The world of living religion is very diverse, embracing the kaleidoscope of human experience, action and emotion. It also encompasses the divine, the encounter with God or gods. Religion teaches that this physical, material world is not the only reality, that there is something greater than the here and now, a purpose more profound than simple survival. Here in this material world it is possible to touch and be touched by this sense of the Divine."

One thing is for sure, the quest for meaning, truth, purpose and happiness will continue and the world's religions will continue to offer spiritual resources to meet these yearnings and to give sanctuary to those needing peace, silence, and solitude.
