Portland writer and illustrator Cynthia Rylant uses the text from the St. James version of the Bible to tell the creation story. "In the beginning" we see a purple circular form on a dark purple page. The next spread is bright yellow as the light comes. At the bottom of a spread of mostly blues and greens representing the seas, yellow brown earth appears.

We turn the pages to see dabs of color on fruit trees, white starry specks across the sky between the sun and the moon, whales, creepy things, and then man and woman.

"God was done with his work. He looked at everything he had created and made, and behold, it was very good." This is a fitting description of this beautiful book.
