Inspired by the thousands of letters she has received from students over the past 25 years of visiting schools across America, civil-rights activist, author, and speaker Ruby Bridges put together this compilation of young people's thoughtful questions and her replies. Aware of the challenges she faced and the courage she needed — as the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school alone in Louisiana, at age six — children feel free to open their hearts to her about their own struggles.

Some speak of their personal concerns: being bullied, facing Asian hate, grappling with dyslexia, and more. Others address social issues that children have taken to heart, like helping the homeless, stopping gun violence, and healing Earth's environment.

In each case, Bridges offers a listening ear, gentle understanding, and encouragement to carry on bravely. For instance, in response to a child who was told they couldn't skate because they were too fat — and who persevered even so — she writes:

"My dearest Taylor,

"Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me! I must say, you have more courage than you think. It takes a lot to stand up to people that constantly put you down, but you did it!

"Now that is bravery! I'm so proud of you, especially when you said that my story inspired you. You can do anything when you set your mind to it.

"Stay strong,
Ruby Bridges"

Readers ages 5 - 10 will be able to identify with the concerns their peers raise and to draw strength from Bridges' responses. They will also enjoy John Jay Cabuay's expressive, dynamic illustrations which show, for instance, children working together to create posters about belonging and inclusion. A child's poem written for Ruby about her lion-like courage opens the book and a glossary of terms completes it. Ruby tells those who have written to her, "I am extremely grateful for your trust in me. You are the inspiration for this book — I heard your hearts."
