This volume is designed to serve as a companion during the 40 days of Lent. Thomas Keating, the co-founder of the Centering Prayer movement, is active with Contemplative Outreach, an organization that encourages this form of prayer. Here he has gathered a portion of Scripture from the liturgical cycle and meditative selections from the many books he has written.

Keating wants us to give up the programs for happiness that we have constructed to satisfy our selfish needs, along with the cultural conditioning which makes them so appealing. Some of the subjects covered are dying to the false self, consent to God, deep listening, liberating the true self, the grace of weakness, spiritual attentiveness, interior silence, faith, and Christian awakening.
