Thank you for your interest in "From Burnout to Motivation." This self-guided version will consist of approximately six hours of learning modules that you can take at your own pace as fits your schedule.

If you’re exhausted and unmotivated, you’re not alone.
About 75% of the United States workforce has experienced or is currently experiencing workplace burnout, and worldwide numbers are similar. Feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, stress, and lack of motivation are shared by everyone from the C-suite to the underpaid employee, and are particularly rampant in people-facing and caregiving professions (teachers, healthcare workers, clergy, social workers, counselors).

You may not need to quit, change jobs, or retire early.
This class will help you reset and reboot by identifying the causes of your burnout, which likely go deeper than your current job. Stress and fatigue at work may be a result of childhood experiences, personality traits, poor communication, and lack of self-care and boundaries. Participants in this course will gain capacities to address these causes, including self-compassion, self-awareness, boundary-setting, energy management, and communication skills.

Practical tools and spiritual practices can offset a toxic work environment.
This course will empower you to regain purpose, inspiration, and fulfillment in your work. You will walk away with:

  • a concrete and individualized plan for daily self-care;
  • a concrete and individualized plan for emergency self-care;
  • a kit of spiritual practices that work to soothe, ground, and recharge; and
  • tools and strategies for navigating communication styles, listening deeply, working through conflicts, and building cohesive teams.

You can overcome burnout, experience more satisfaction, and feel purposeful.
Many approaches to burnout focus only on the mind and/or the body, neglecting the heart and soul. But burnout is also a spiritual malady that results when we do not take time to connect to what gives us joy or meaning.

This is where spiritual wisdom comes in. It’s the ability to notice what’s sacred to us, to read the sacred in our everyday lives. Spiritual wisdom training can help all professionals — from teachers to nurses, clergy to counselors, activists to executives — thrive personally and professionally.

How you will learn.
The online program, available starting March 1, 2025, consists of approximately six hours of learning modules that you can take at your own pace as fits your schedule. You will hear teachings from Dr. Habib Todd Boerger and Rev. Julie Davis with time for reflection, journaling, and discussion. Plenty of time will be set aside for doing spiritual practices.

Dr. Habīb Todd Boerger
I spent much of my professional life leading projects and staff in the field of human services. I left the field to pursue spiritual studies and now hold a Master’s of Divinity from the University of Sufism in Spiritual Healing and Counseling, and a Ph.D. in Theology from Claremont School of Theology in Spirituality and Spiritual Formation in Christianity and Islam. I also have a master’s degree from Texas State University, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and a Certificate of Islamic Studies from Bayan Islamic Graduate School. My spiritual journey has included a variety of experiences and contexts, which has furthered my appreciation for diverse approaches to spirituality and increased the value I place on an informed awareness of differences with a simultaneous focus on commonalities. I am passionate about supporting others in their spiritual journeys; building interfaith bridges; and sharing multifaith spiritual formation practices.

Reverend Julie Davis
I started my career as a high school teacher. I was effective, loved the work, adored my students – and burned out after about 7 years! This resulted in a career crisis/change. I went to seminary where I studied spiritual care and learned about myself and the causes of my burnout (among lots of other things). I am the co-founder of The Table, a postchurch gathering for all spiritual folks. I first joined the S&P team as a Fellow with The Practicing Democracy Project and continue to do a lot of work at the intersection of spirituality and democracy. I hold an MDiv in Interfaith Chaplaincy from Claremont School of Theology, and am an ordained minister in the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. I am passionate about movements for social justice, particularly around the intersections of religion and issues of race, gender, and sexuality.
