Spiritually Literate Readings of
Deliver Us from Eva

Transforming Enmity. Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, a great Hasidic sage, once prayed: "Never allow the negativity of others to influence my life or affect my destiny." Certainly the three angry men in this romantic comedy would find a larger share of happiness if they would adopt this spiritual approach. Instead, they pin their unhappiness on Eva and complicate their suffering by trying to get even with her through a dishonest scheme. Transforming enmity is one of life's most important lessons and it begins with changing ourselves.

Difficult People. Deliver Us From Eva is a funny romantic comedy about one very patient and flexible man who refuses to let a difficult woman drive him away. He is convinced that she has something to teach him. Difficult people can be "cosmic couriers" sent by God to refine our characters, to open our hearts, or to help us become more compassionate and empathetic. After watching this film and letting it sink into your consciousness, you might want to try the following spiritual practice, which is suggested by Mark I. Rosen in Thank You for Being Such a Pain: Spiritual Guidance for Dealing with Difficult People:

"The next time a difficult person comes into your life, it might be helpful to tell yourself something along the lines of '(Sigh) Here comes another one. God, I ask you to guide me. You have sent this person to me for a reason. Help me to know what it is, and help me to cope successfully.' "
