Small Wonders is an inspiring documentary about a dedicated, demanding, and enthusiastic teacher who has made a big difference in the lives of hundreds of students in East Harlem, New York. Roberta Guaspari-Tzavaras set up a nonprofit organization in 1990 to fund a violin program for 150 students every year at several schools. The kids are chosen by lottery and must make a commitment to practice the instrument every day.

This emotionally affecting documentary directed by Allan Miller shows Guaspari-Tzavaras at work in rehearsals with the children. It follows the musical career of Jose, an eight year old who is shown at the end of the year playing in a concert with other beginners. A group of her gifted students perform at Carnegie Hall with virtuoso violinists Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, and Arnold Steinhardt. Small Wonders hurrahs the virtues of discipline and creativity. It also makes a good case for keeping music as an essential part of all school curriculums.
