I.Q. is set in 1955 in Princeton, New Jersey. Albert Einstein is a celebrity in a community of scholars there and has a circle of three professor friends who are equally enthusiastic about intellectual adventurism. They also share a dislike for the stuffy and pretentious fiance of Einstein's niece, a mathematician.

When Ed, a mechanic, meets her, he falls in love at first sight. Her famous uncle takes a liking to the young man — especially his earnest interest in stars and outer space. After Ed gives him a ride on his motorcycle. Einstein knows that it is time to play matchmaker and put Catherine together with the only man who could truly love her.

Director Fred Schepisi animates this film with the same breezy and buoyant spirit that made Roxanne so appealing. Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan, and Walter Matthau are totally delightful in the three lead roles. With equal doses of sentimentality and silliness, I.Q. is tailor-made for lovers of romantic comedy. And it makes a valid point that a primary motive for love is a sense of self-worth.
