Here is an intriguing and stylistically luxuriant film written and directed by Mike Figgis (Stormy Monday, Internal Affairs). Kevin Anderson stars as an architectural writer who visits a small town where the woman (Kim Novak) who gave him up at birth is dying. He finds himself mysteriously drawn to a cast-iron building and to the alluring wife (Pamela Gidley) of an old college chum (Bill Pullman). Two lovers were shot to death in the building 30 years ago. Will the writer and his lover meet the same fate? Figgis creates amazing psychodramas. Even though this one is too labored, Liebestraum carries its pleasures well.
