This superb Spanish film conveys the passion and control that are at the heart of flamenco dancing. Antonio Gades is featured as the director/choreographer of a dance company in contemporary Spain who finds the perfect woman (Laura Del Sol) to be his leading lady in a production of Carmen set to Bizet's operatic score. She is an independent, totally erotic and narcissistic woman. He becomes obsessed with her, wins her for awhile, but discovers that she cannot be caged by any man.

Director Carlos Saura (Blood Wedding) fills the screen with some of the most exciting dancing ever captured on film. The emotional undertow of Antonio's love and then jealousy is richly distilled in the dramatic guitar music of Pac De Lucia, one of Spain's most accomplished practitioners of flamenco and classic Andalusian guitar.
