The challenge of zen is to adopt the attitude of nodding toward everything. If we're truly mindful, we begin to acknowledge the car for the role it plays in getting us from one place to another, the lightbulb for illuminating us in the dark, the ice-box for preserving our food. We express gratitude for the telephone, the shovel, the pillow, the dish, the shoe. Soon, we are thanking everything and each other. Behold a better world.
