The longer I live, the more surprising God is. In the very heart of any surprise, including whatever leads up to and falls out of it, there is God.

After spilling soup, I find the voices at Evensong and the flavor of the soup full of life and richness, without having to make any special effort to pay attention to them. It is not practical to plan on spilling the soup. Fortunately, life is full of surprises. This week, make a special effort to look for God in each surprise that life hands you, big and small, good and bad. Are you surprised into paying attention to an aspect of God's creation that you'd overlooked before? Does a surprise draw you deeper into life?
