So what's the purpose? To understand the nature of light. This is what all the great religions have been about. Scientific pursuit, from our prehistoric ancestors to the architects of modern technology, has been preoccupied with light. And all pilgrims, whether to Mecca, Jerusalem, Allahabad, Amristar, CERN, or Fermilab are in search of light. In all our hearts — even at the heart of the universe itself — we detect a divine echo which, in verbal form, might well coincide with Einstein's statement: "For the rest of my life, I'll be trying to understand the meaning of light."
