Let's return to the dance — interrupted when religion came along! But that disruption serves to remind us that Hinduism, the oldest of the formal religions, retained strong elements of the dance. The three most worshiped divinities in India today are Shiva, Vishnu, and Shakti, the Great Mother. Shiva is one of the oldest Indian gods and is often portrayed as the king of dancers. According to Hindu belief, all life is part of a great rhythmic process of creation and destruction, of death and rebirth, and Shiva's dance symbolizes the eternal life-death rhythm which goes on eternally.
