In the Jatakas [stories of the former lives of the Buddha], animals freely sacrifice themselves for humans, and humans sacrifice themselves for "lower" animals. Imagine, humans sacrificing themselves for animals! It is almost unimaginable in our culture today. Yet, we do have the example of Greenpeace, whose leaders have put their own bodies between the harpooners' cannons and the whales.
